Day 4: I Passed the Sacrament & Hit a Goat

Don D. & Hilary

Sunday July 10 2011:  Don D.  Pretty much one of the most amazing artists in Ghana.  He came to our hostel and sold us these amazing oil paintings.

Of course we have to watch our waist lines while we are here so Amanda is our official trainer.  She more or less kicked all of our butts the first day :) Working out in Ghana is so different from home!  To begin with, you are sweaty before you even start.  On top of that, we are having to get quite creative in our routines.  Thank you Amanda!!
Bailey

So let me tell you a little story about the taxi's here in Ghana.  They may or may not have doors or windows.  They sound like they are going to fall apart any second and we are all pretty much certain that there is no such thing as safety and emissions testing here.  The drivers have proven to be equally entertaining.  I'm convinced there is some special morse code among taxi drivers here using their horns. Our taxi driver today was pretty talented.  He was able to speed.  Backwards.  Consequently going backwards doesn't provide the driver with an awesome view of the street.  He flipped around, gunned it when all of a sudden a baby goat walked into the road.  He wasn't slowing down so Bailey, Hilary, Shantell and Ashley nearly had a heart attack because that little goat was about to become dinner.  We have high hopes that he walked away.

Today was a free day so a bunch of us decided to go to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We were quite late after our epic taxi adventure and had to wait outside until they were finished passing the sacrament in the chapel.  We were all thrilled when they brought it outside to us!  Hilary took the tray with intentions of just passing it around but nobody else would take the tray!  She ended up passing it around to our group while we were there.  I hope that's ok with the church :)

Oaari (OH - ARE - EE).  Best African Game so far.  It is the Ghanaian version of Mancala but over here they refer to it as the "marriage game".  Bonzi (aka the best chef ever) told us that the reason it is called that marriage game is because it takes so long to complete that it gives one another the chance to cool off.  and then talk about an issue.  However, Cameron and I are not married and as such it is having the opposite effect.  Turns out I may be a skosh more competitive than I thought.  Cameron and Hilary have a bet that by the end of the month whoever has the most pods has to buy the other an Oaari set.  So far Cameron is winning by one pod but don't expect his luck to hold out.
